The swollen sun sinks red and throbbing
its indomitable pulse
of victory and defeat
into the dry land.

The people stand as one,
eyes burning like stars
that do not fear night,
relating a half century
of scratching soil turned to dust.
In the shadows of the faceless factory
that sucks the lifeblood from their wells
and gives no jobs in return,
they make their preparations --
slapping hot tortillas on old stones,
rocking their children,
and dreaming of water.
