Awaiting the two folksinging stars, Holly Near and Ronnie Gilbert, the sprawling living room was abuzz with anticipation in the Upper West Side home of Jimmy Breslin and Ronnie Eldridge on Monday, May 9, 2005. Ronnie opened the program, informing the packed room that shed be sharing her historical remembrances with Pete Seeger and the other Almanac Singers, and later, the Weavers, interspersed with familiar, singable songs of protest and struggle. Following Ronnie, Holly presented an equally focused and politically relevant concert, enlaced with commentary to lift the spirits of the supposedly demoralized group before her. She ended her segment with “I’m Not Afraid,” a powerful song decrying the perils of expliting religion for their own fundamentalist, secularist aims.
