In 1987, an Upper West Side, New York City-based sub-committee of the Committee for Non-Intervention in Central America wrote to the Nicaraguan government requesting to be paired with a Nicaraguan city. A letter was received assigning this small group of New Yorkers to the village of Tipitapa with a population in excess of 100,000.
A group of New York City residents (based on the Upper West Side) visited
Tipitapa in May 1987. Out of that first people-to-people exchange grew the
Municipal Coordinating Council for Sister Cities twinned with Tipitapa (the
Spanish acronym is COMPALCIHT). Now recognized as a non-governmental
organization, COMPALCIHT is our official partner organization. Originally
known as the Upper West Side-Tipitapa Sister City project, we have evolved
into a registered 501(c)3 organization known as Dos Pueblos: New
York-Tipitapa Sister City Project. This change recognizes that we have
evolved into a city-wide organization and that our purposes reflects the
dual meaning of “two peoples” and “two villages” working to support a global
future based on human rights, justice, and peace. |
